GNU<\/b> is an operating system<\/a> and an extensive collection of computer software. GNU is composed wholly of free software<\/a>, most of which is licensed under GNU’s own GPL<\/a>.<\/p>\n

GNU<\/i> is a recursive acronym<\/a> for “GNU’s Not Unix!”<\/i>, chosen because GNU’s design is Unix-like<\/a>, but differs from Unix by being free software and containing no Unix<\/a> code. The GNU project includes an operating system kernel<\/a>, GNU HURD<\/a>, which was the original focus of the Free Software Foundation<\/a> (FSF). However, non-GNU kernels, most famously Linux<\/a>, can also be used with GNU software; and since the kernel is the least <\/i>mature part of GNU, this is how it is usually used. The combination of GNU software and the Linux kernel is commonly known as Linux<\/a> (or less frequently GNU\/Linux; see GNU\/Linux naming controversy<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Development of the GNU operating system was initiated by Richard Stallman<\/a> at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology<\/a> (MIT) Artificial Intelligence Laboratory as a project called the GNU Project<\/a> which was publicly announced on September 27, 1983, on the net.unix-wizards and net.usoft newsgroups<\/a> by Richard Stallman<\/a>.<\/sup><\/p>\n
